Watch Dr Bedford discuss his lecture

AB Vista’s Research Director, Dr Mike Bedford, has been asked to deliver the prestigious Gordon Memorial lecture at this year’s Annual Spring Meeting of the UK branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association.

The Robert Fraser Gordon Memorial Trust was established in 1982 and each year since then has selected an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to a branch of poultry science to deliver a lecture.

Commenting on the invitation speak, Dr Bedford explained: “Apparently when deciding who to invite, the board looks for individuals that can share a rich history in terms of the current status of the area they are working in and the ways in which it has evolved – and I must admit that when I was asked, I thought I was way too young to have the length of experience necessary – but then realised just how old I am!”

Dr Bedford’s lecture will explore the use of enzymes in animal feed, taking a look at how the industry started, the challenges faced bringing enzymes into the market, and the dynamics of the market.

“As well as looking at the development of new enzymes, I’ll be reflecting on the innovative technologies that we needed to develop in order to ensure that customers understood how to use these products, how to measure them in feed and how to maximise efficacy”, Dr Bedford commented.

“I will also discuss the history of how enzymes developed and how they propagated the industry that we see today, which is worth almost $1 billion. When I started in the industry, £1 million was sold in the first year, so it’s quite an expansion.”

The meeting is set to attract more than 500 scientists, vets and policy makers worldwide interested in learning about the challenges and opportunities facing the livestock sector, and the ways it can innovate to create more sustainable systems.

An international line-up of speakers will discuss the ground-breaking technologies in livestock production, the issues that need to be addressed to ensure potential gains in productivity are reached, how those developments are communicated to farmers and producers, and how the sector can encourage the adoption of new ways of working.

The conference will take place at Dublin’s Croke Park Stadium from 9th – 11th April.
