Tackling mycotoxins with UltraSorb
Despite cropping strategies to minimise fungal infection of crop plants, the only practical opportunity to address mycotoxin contamination arises at the point of feeding.
Commonly some form of binding compound is added to the ration in an attempt to physically attach to the mycotoxin in the GI tract of the animal and remove it from the animal via the manure.
Typically these binding compounds are clay based minerals with three dimensional structures to match the mycotoxin. Difficulties arise when you assume that all the different types of mycotoxin will be captured using one type of clay based mineral product. To that end, second generation products have be created which include a concentrated source of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS). MOS is a complex sugar derived from the cell walls of yeast that shows a high binding affinity for certain mycotoxins.
