Econase® XT

Econase® XT is an inherently thermostable enzyme developed for use in animal feeds.

The xylanase in this product is easy to analyse, and in trials has been quantitatively analysed in feeds conditioned up to 95°C (203°F) for 30 seconds followed by pelleting.

One particular problem faced when using enzymes in the animal feed industry is that enzymes are sensitive to heat and pressure.  Thus, processing the feed can destroy the enzyme, making it inactive.

There are two ways of solving this problem.  One is to apply a coating to the enzyme to improve its thermostability.  However, coating can reduce the dissolution rate of the enzyme, resulting in slower release and poor efficacy in the animal.  Coating also increases the bulk density of the feed resulting in higher variability between feed samples.  The second approach is to look for thermostability as an inherent characteristic of the enzyme.  Econase® XT is a successful example of the investigation, isolation and expression of a thermostable gene.
